Pay 0% VAT on qualifying home air conditioning installations
Qualifying residential air conditioning installations in the UK are eligible for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, provided the system works as a reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump supplying both heating and cooling. The relief covers the equipment and the labour when they are bought together, and we apply it automatically on your quote where your installation qualifies.
The installation must be in a domestic building — a house, flat or bungalow that you live in.

Who qualifies for 0% VAT on home air conditioning?
The 0% VAT rate is available on qualifying residential installations until 31 March 2027. Here is the two-point check we apply on every quote.

How long does a standard installation take?
A standard single split wall-mounted installation is typically completed in one day (4–6 hours). Multi-room or complex pipe runs may take longer — confirmed at survey.
Do I need planning permission?
For most freehold homes in England, no — air conditioning outdoor units usually fall under permitted development if positioned sensibly. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas may need consent; we'll flag this at survey.
What if my walls are solid brick?
Solid brick, cavity, timber frame and rendered walls are all fine. Our F-Gas engineers core-drill a discreet 60mm hole for the pipe run and seal it weatherproof. Core drilling is included in the £1650 + VAT starting price.
R32 refrigerant — is it safe?
Yes. R32 is the current UK/EU standard refrigerant, chosen for its low global warming potential and high efficiency. It's handled exclusively by our F-Gas certified engineers, in line with EU F-Gas Regulation 517/2014.
Is the deposit really refundable?
You only pay for your units up front — labour and materials are paid after the installation is completed and signed off. If we survey your property and deem it unsuitable, your unit payment is refunded in full.
Do I pay VAT on a home air conditioning installation?
Qualifying residential air conditioning installations are eligible for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, provided the system is a permanently fixed reverse-cycle air-to-air heat pump supplying both heating and cooling and the unit and installation are bought together from a VAT-registered contractor.
What qualifies for the 0% VAT air conditioning rate?
The property must be a residential domestic building such as a house, flat or bungalow; the system must be a fixed split system or air-to-air heat pump with heating capability; and the unit and the fitting must be purchased together as supply and fit. Portable units and commercial properties are excluded.
What happens if I buy the air conditioning unit separately?
Buying the hardware on its own triggers the standard 20% VAT rate on the equipment. The 0% rate only applies when the unit and the installation labour are supplied together by the same VAT-registered contractor.
When does the 0% VAT air conditioning relief end?
The 0% rate expires on 31 March 2027, after which qualifying residential installations revert to the reduced 5% VAT rate.

That fixed starting price covers the air conditioning unit itself, labour by our own F-Gas certified engineers and every standard installation material — copper pipework and insulation, trunking, drain hose, isolator, cable, brackets and sealant — with no additional materials cost. Multi-split systems, long pipe runs, roof-level outdoor positions and new electrical circuits are priced transparently at survey, so the quote you accept is the price you pay.
Supply-only units, installation materials, copper pipe, trunking and professional HVAC tools are also stocked at our Chertsey trade counter, open Monday to Saturday, 8am – 5pm.
