Single split or multi-split?

One outdoor unit per room, or one outdoor unit serving several. The trade-offs in cost, wall space, control and repair.

The difference in one line

A single split pairs one indoor unit with one outdoor unit. A multi-split runs two to five indoor units from a single, larger outdoor unit through separate pipe runs.

When single splits win

For one room there is no argument — a single split is cheaper, simpler and quicker to fit.

  • Lower equipment cost per room
  • Independent operation — one fault does not affect the other rooms
  • Rooms can be added in stages as budget allows
  • Simpler, shorter pipe runs in most houses

When a multi-split wins

Once you reach two or more rooms, the decision is usually driven by outdoor wall space and appearance rather than price alone.

  • One condenser instead of three or four on the wall
  • Better for flats, conservation areas and tight side returns
  • Usually one set of electrics rather than several
  • Neater when all rooms are being done at the same time

The honest trade-offs

A multi-split shares one compressor, so a condenser fault takes every room offline at once, and part-load efficiency can be worse if only one small room is running. Pipe runs are longer and the install day is longer. On two rooms the cost is often close — which is why the builder shows both options side by side rather than deciding for you.
