LPG combi boilers: options for homes off the gas grid

What changes when your home runs on bottled or tanked LPG instead of mains gas — models, costs and the conversion question.

Most combis have an LPG version

Many mainstream combi boilers are available in LPG variants or with a manufacturer conversion kit. The boiler looks and works the same; the burner and injector are set up for LPG's different characteristics. Our shop's fuel filter shows which packs are LPG-ready.

What is different in practice

  • Fuel storage — a bulk tank in the garden or bottled cylinders, rather than a mains connection
  • Fuel cost — LPG per kWh typically costs more than mains gas; efficiency matters more
  • Supply logistics — you order fuel deliveries, so tank level monitoring becomes part of life

Mains gas boiler with a conversion kit?

Some models convert between fuels with a manufacturer kit, but it must be the manufacturer's own kit fitted by a qualified engineer — never an improvised adjustment. If you might connect to mains gas later, ask us about convertible models before buying.

Worth considering alongside

Off-grid homes are exactly where an air source heat pump or reverse-cycle air conditioning can undercut LPG running costs — and qualifying residential supply-and-fit installations currently carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Worth a quote alongside the boiler.

Common questions

Can any combi boiler run on LPG?

No — only models with an LPG variant or an official manufacturer conversion kit. Check the fuel type on the product specification before buying.

Is LPG more expensive than mains gas?

Per unit of heat, usually yes. That makes boiler efficiency and correct sizing more important for off-grid homes.
